What can be discovered at MRI ear-acoustic examination?

  • Acoustic neuroma (auditory nerve tumor) sometimes called vestibular schwannoma
  • Possible neurovascular impact of surrounding vessels
  • Inflammation eg labyrinthitis and neuritis
  • Deformities of the ear canal or auditory nerve
  • Structural changes in the balance organ
  • Infection or cysts
  • Tumors at the base of the skull or auditory nerve, e.g. meningioma
  • Atypical Ménière's disease (fluid disorder in the inner ear)
  • Pressure changes or fluid accumulation
  • Injuries after trauma
  • Post-surgery check-up

MR Ear-Acoustic

MRI of the ear-acoustic can provide response to your symptoms

Why MRI ear-acoustic scanning?

Do you have hearing problems, persistent tinnitus, dizziness, balance problems or other symptoms in your ears? An MRI scan is a safe and effective method to examine the inner ear, the auditory nerve (vestibulocochlear nerve) in detail, with a focus on detecting changes that may affect hearing and balance.

Unlike regular X-rays, MRI provides clear images of nerves, the brain and soft tissues – completely without radiation.

MRI of the ears is mainly used in cases of suspected auditory nerve tumor (acoustic neuroma), other tumors such as meningioma, multiple sclerosis (MS), balance disorders, inflammatory conditions, atypical Ménière's disease or other changes in the inner ear, auditory nerve and vessels and brain tissue associated with these.

For those seeking an MRI of the ears, an MRI examination is recommended.

What happens if an acoustic neuroma is discovered?

An acoustic neuroma is a benign tumor that grows along the auditory and balance nerves. It can cause symptoms such as unilateral hearing loss, tinnitus, or balance problems.

MRI is the best method for detecting tumors at an early stage. Early diagnosis provides greater opportunities for gentle treatment and better preservation of hearing and balance.

Treatment may consist of regular check-ups, radiation therapy, or surgery depending on the size and symptoms.

Advanced and secure examination

MRI ear-acoustic is a completely harmless and painless examination that uses magnetic fields and radio waves – without X-ray radiation.

The examination shows the ear canal, the bony structures of the inner ear (cochlea, semicircular canals), the balance organ, the auditory nerve and nearby structures (vestibulocochlear nerve) with a very high level of detail, as well as surrounding vessels and possible neurovascular involvement. Parts of the cerebrum, brainstem and cerebellum that are adjacent to the inner ear and the balance nerve are also imaged.

The survey takes about 20 minutes.

Is MRI ear-acoustic right for you?

MRI of the ears is recommended for unilateral hearing loss, unilateral tinnitus, dizziness, recurrent balance problems, suspected tumor, trigeminal neuralgia, suspected MS with hearing/balance effects or follow-up of a known change.

It is also common during neurological examinations where one wants to rule out effects on the auditory nerve or other structures at the base of the skull.
With MRI, your doctor gets a clear basis for further treatment or investigation.

Results from specialist within 7 working days

After the examination, your MRI images are reviewed by an X-ray specialist. You will then receive a personalized medical report from Prevcare's specialist physician – delivered within 7 working days.

You will also receive your MRI images via a link in your email, from Evidia Röntgen. With a clear answer, you can quickly proceed with the correct treatment.

Referral to a specialist if necessary

If the examination shows something that requires further care, our doctor - in consultation with you - will send a referral to the correct level of care.

A referral is included in the cost of the MRI examination and will help you smoothly proceed with processing and care.

What is the difference between an MRI and an MRI scan?

Many people say MRI of the ears, but the correct name is MRI or magnetic resonance imaging.

MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves – not X-rays – to create high-resolution images of the ear's internal structures, nerves, balance organs, and surrounding blood vessels and brain tissue.

If you have hearing problems or dizziness, an MRI can quickly provide answers and guide you to the correct treatment.

Information about MR Otorhinolaryngology

What is an MRI scan?
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI or MR) is a medical imaging technique for diagnostic purposes using a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) camera.
  • MRI involves taking images using magnetic fields and radio waves without any X-ray radiation, which makes it completely harmless.
  • The technology is used to detect diseases, map injuries and follow up treatments at the millimeter level in almost all human organs, such as tumors, inflammation, fractures, osteoarthritis, stroke and changes in blood vessels and bones.
This is how MR-Ear-Acusticus works:
  • MRI examinations are performed at X-ray clinics. The images are first reviewed by a specialist in X-ray (radiologist). Prevcare's specialist then reviews the results, writes a summary and recommendations. If necessary, a referral is sent for further processing.
  • When you are examined with an MRI camera, you lie down on a bed that is moved into a so-called magnetic tunnel. There, you lie still while the images are taken. A nurse operates the camera from an adjacent room, and you can talk to the nurse at all times through a microphone and speaker.
  • After the MRI examination, you can leave the clinic immediately.
  • MR Ear-Acustic takes about 20 minutes.
Who is not suitable for MR-Ear-Acusticus?
  • If you have electronic equipment implanted in your body, such as a pacemaker, insulin pump or cochlear implant, for example.
  • If you have had surgery on your head or heart and have metal clips implanted instead of stitches after surgery.
  • If you have metal splinters in your eye or other part of your body.
  • If you answered yes to any of the above, tell us so we and our doctor can look at what options are available.
  • Fixed dental fillings, dental implants, prostheses, hip-knee prostheses, and screws in the arms and legs are not an obstacle to an MRI examination.
How do I prepare for MR-Ear-Acusticus?
  • Please state in your health form if you have had previous X-ray examinations. This is so that our doctors can assess your condition as accurately as possible.
  • It is important that you state if you have diabetes, kidney problems or other illnesses in your health form. This is so that our doctors can assess your condition as accurately as possible.
  • It is necessary to tell your doctor if you are pregnant. MRI is generally not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy. In such cases, the examination may be postponed until after the baby is born.
  • It is important that you tell us if you suffer from claustrophobia, or have a general feeling of discomfort in confined spaces. In this case, a discussion can be held with the responsible doctor regarding whether it is necessary to prescribe sedatives to make the examination as comfortable as possible. If you think that you are calmed by music, there is also, in some cases, the possibility of playing music during the examination for your comfort.
  • Also take the opportunity to leave all forms of jewelry and clothing that contain metal at home before you come for the examination.
  • Otherwise, it is good to discuss with the responsible specialist to see if there is anything above that cannot be fulfilled. At Prevcare, we are usually flexible regarding different solutions.
