Does a full body scan use radiation?
It depends on the method. A full-body MRI scan does not use ionizing radiation. A full-body CT scan, on the other hand, uses X-rays.
MRI is sometimes called magnetic resonance imaging, but the name does not mean that X-rays are used. The images are created through the interaction of magnetic fields, radio waves, and hydrogen atoms in the body.

What does the absence of ionizing radiation mean?
MRI does not involve the radiation dose associated with X-rays and CT scans. This is an advantage when MRI is the method that can best answer the question.
However, this does not mean that MRI is always better than CT. CT is faster and often more appropriate in cases such as acute trauma, lung issues, kidney stones and certain skeletal changes.
The choice between methods should therefore be based on which tissue or disease needs to be assessed, not solely on the radiation issue.
When should you seek care instead of booking a screening?
Acute symptoms such as sudden weakness, chest pain, severe shortness of breath, severe abdominal pain or rapidly worsening condition should be assessed immediately by healthcare professionals.
A specific symptom may require a method other than a whole-body MRI. Blood in the stool may require a colonoscopy, a breast lump may require a targeted breast scan, and acute kidney stone pain often requires a CT scan or ultrasound.
The absence of radiation does not make a planned examination suitable as a substitute for emergency or targeted diagnostics.
Do not wait for a private full-body MRI if you have time-critical symptoms or suspicion of stroke, heart attack or other acute illness.
What safety issues are checked before MRI?
You will be asked questions about pacemakers, neurostimulators, cochlear implants, metal clips, insulin pumps, previous surgeries, and metal fragments in the eyes or body.
Many modern implants can be examined under certain conditions, but the clinic needs the manufacturer, model and documentation. MR compatibility should not be assumed.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding are discussed with the clinic. If contrast is being considered, medical issues, kidney function and previous reactions are also assessed.
Is whole-body MRI without contrast completely risk-free?
The examination involves loud noises, limited space and the need to lie still. Hearing protection is used and people with pronounced claustrophobia may need special planning.
Radio waves can slightly heat tissue, which the machine monitors through safety limits. However, misplaced metal objects or equipment can be dangerous in the magnetic field.
Another type of risk is medical: broad screening can find uncertain incidental findings that lead to more examinations, concern, or unnecessary treatment.
How to prepare for a safe examination
Collect implant cards and surgery details in advance. Also tell us about tattoos, medicated patches, braces, metal work, and previous eye injuries.
Follow the clinic's instructions regarding clothing, food and medication. Do not bring phones, watches, hearing aids or credit cards into the magnet room.
Ask what is included in the protocol, whether contrast is used, and how any findings are followed up. Safety includes both the MRI environment itself and the medical management afterward.
