Feeling and nervous system

Numbness

Numbness and tingling can come from nerves, back, circulation, stress, vitamin deficiency, inflammation or the brain and nervous system. When the symptoms are new, one-sided, recurring or combined with weakness, speech impairment or balance problems, they should be evaluated medically.

Brain and nervous system

When symptoms need to be medically assessed

Symptoms from the brain and nervous system can have many different causes. Sometimes they are temporary or benign, but sometimes medical assessment is needed to understand whether further investigation is necessary.

A brain MRI can provide detailed images of the brain and nearby structures. The examination is not a substitute for emergency care or medical evaluation, but can be an important step when a doctor or specialist wants to examine the brain with imaging diagnostics.

From booking to medical response

You book the examination privately without a referral. After the MRI examination, the images are reviewed by a radiologist and the results are compiled in a written report. You will then receive a review with a specialist.

1

Book privately without a referral

You choose MRI brain and book the examination directly via Prevcare.

2

Perform the MRI examination

The examination is performed with an MRI scanner according to a protocol adapted for the brain and nearby structures.

3

Get report and medical review

The images are reviewed by a radiologist. You will receive a written report, a review with a specialist and a referral if necessary.

MRI brain and medical assessment

Diagnostic imaging always needs to be interpreted in context

MRI can show structural changes, but symptoms from the brain and nervous system always need to be assessed together with medical history, neurological examination and other relevant information.

What can cause numbness?

Numbness means that sensation is reduced, altered or experienced as tingling, prickling or a sugar-drinking sensation. The symptoms can be temporary and benign, for example after pressure on a nerve, but they can also be due to effects from the spine, peripheral nerves, circulation, metabolism or the central nervous system.

It is important to describe where the numbness is, whether it is one-sided or two-sided, how long it lasts, and whether it is accompanied by other symptoms. Numbness in the face, arm, or leg on one side, especially if it occurs suddenly, should be taken very seriously.

Recurrent or prolonged numbness should be assessed, especially if it affects function, gait, strength, or fine motor skills.

When might a brain MRI be appropriate for numbness?

Brain MRI may be indicated when numbness is suspected to be related to the brain or central nervous system. This may include numbness combined with weakness, vision problems, balance problems, speech difficulties, facial effects, or other neurological symptoms.

In other cases, a targeted MRI of the back, neck, or other body part may be more relevant, especially if the symptoms follow a nerve root or are affected by back problems. The choice of examination depends on the symptom picture and medical question.

At Prevcare you can book a private MRI brain scan without a referral. If another examination is more appropriate, it may need to be assessed based on your symptoms.

What can MRI show in case of numbness?

MRI of the brain can show certain changes in the brain that may be relevant to neurological numbness, such as inflammatory changes, signs of previous vascular involvement, suspicious tumor findings or other structural abnormalities.

However, MRI does not show all causes of numbness. Peripheral nerve problems, metabolism, blood values, vitamin deficiency or pressure on nerves outside the brain may require other examinations.

An MRI result therefore always needs to be linked to symptoms, neurological examination and any further healthcare contact.

  • Brain assessment in neurological symptoms.
  • May show some inflammatory or structural changes.
  • Can help with unilateral or recurrent neurological problems.
  • Other tests may be needed for nerves, blood values, or the back.
  • Specialist review is included after the examination.

Numbness requiring emergency care

Sudden numbness in the face, arm, or leg on one side can be a sign of stroke or TIA, especially if it comes along with weakness, difficulty speaking, vision problems, dizziness, or balance problems.

If you have these symptoms, you should seek emergency care immediately. Time is of the essence when a stroke is suspected, and a planned private MRI is not the right first step.

Seek emergency care for sudden unilateral symptoms

Seek emergency care for sudden numbness, weakness, facial weakness, speech difficulties, vision problems, or balance problems.

Price and booking

Current prices and bookings can be found on the MRI brain page . The examination can be booked privately without a referral and includes a radiological report and a review with a specialist.

If something needs to be investigated further, Prevcare can help you with a referral after medical assessment.

When another MRI may be better

If the numbness clearly follows an area in the arm, leg, or back, a targeted MRI of the cervical spine, lumbar spine, or other region may sometimes be more relevant than a brain MRI. It depends on where the symptoms are located and how they arose.

If you want to examine several parts of the body preventively, whole-body MRI may be a broader option, but clear neurological symptoms should be assessed specifically.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about numbness

Can numbness be neurological?

Yes, numbness can have a neurological cause, but can also be due to peripheral nerves, back, circulation, vitamin deficiency or other factors.

When is numbness an emergency?

Seek emergency care for sudden one-sided numbness, weakness, facial effects, speech difficulties, vision problems or balance problems.

Can a brain MRI show the cause of numbness?

MRI can show some changes in the brain, but not all causes of numbness. Sometimes other tests are needed.

Can I book a brain MRI without a referral?

Yes, brain MRI can be booked privately through Prevcare without a referral.

When is targeted MRI better suited?

If the numbness is suspected to come from the neck, back or peripheral nerve, a targeted MRI or other examination may be more relevant.
