What is the difference between MRI and CT?
MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images, especially of soft tissues, the nervous system, joints, and certain organs.
CT, computed tomography, is a form of X-ray that takes detailed cross-sectional images of the body. CT is often used when rapid diagnostic imaging is needed or when evaluating the skeleton, lungs, acute bleeding, or certain abdominal issues.
Which method is best therefore depends on the medical question.

When is MRI often more relevant?

This does not mean that MRI is always the right method. In some situations, CT is faster or more accurate.

CT can also provide very detailed information about the skeleton and some organ structures. Sometimes contrast agents are used to make blood vessels and organs more visible.

When should healthcare decide directly?
In the event of acute symptoms, you should not try to choose between MRI and CT yourself. The healthcare provider needs to assess which method is the fastest and most relevant.
This applies, for example, to suspected stroke, severe chest pain, trauma, severe abdominal pain or rapidly deteriorating general condition.
Planned private MRI is better suited for non-urgent issues where the choice of examination can be made based on the question.
Planned private MRI should not replace emergency care for sudden, severe or rapidly worsening symptoms.
Can MRI and CT complement each other?
Yes. In some investigations, CT and MRI can provide different types of information. CT can provide a quick overview and MRI can provide a more detailed soft tissue assessment.
In other cases, one method is sufficient. It is therefore important to start with the question: what does the study need to show?
Doing more research is not always better. The right research in the right context is more important.
What does the result mean?
Both MRI and CT need to be reviewed by a radiologist. The results should be interpreted together with symptoms, tests, and previous illnesses.
If an examination shows something abnormal, the next step may be follow-up, referral, new imaging diagnostics or other treatment.
A normal response may also need to be followed up if symptoms persist or change.
Limitations and next steps
MRI or CT needs to be understood as part of a larger medical picture. Imaging can provide important answers, but it cannot alone explain all symptoms or replace clinical judgment.
A finding on MRI may be significant, but may also be an age-related or benign change. Similarly, a normal MRI response may need to be followed up if symptoms persist or change.
The best next step therefore depends on what the examination shows, how your symptoms develop, and whether there are risk factors, previous illnesses, or other test results to consider.
