What is the difference between MRI and ultrasound?
Ultrasound is performed with a transducer placed against the skin that sends sound waves into the body. The examination can often be done quickly and in real time.
MRI is performed in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine and provides detailed images in multiple planes. The method can be particularly useful for soft tissues, joints, the brain, spine, and certain organs.
Both methods do not involve regular X-ray radiation, but they have different strengths.

When is ultrasound often relevant?
Ultrasound may be relevant for questions about the gallbladder, certain abdominal organs, vessels, fluid, muscles, tendons, and gynecological assessments.
The method can also be used to guide sampling or assess movement and blood flow in certain contexts.
There are limitations, for example when there is a lot of gas in the intestine, deeper structures or when more detailed tissue assessment is needed.
When is MRI often more relevant?
MRI may be more relevant when detailed information is needed about the brain, spine, joints, soft tissues, prostate, or certain organs where ultrasound does not provide sufficient information.
MRI may also be useful when previous examinations do not explain the symptoms or when a more comprehensive imaging assessment is needed.

When should you not wait for a scheduled examination?
In the event of acute symptoms, it is the healthcare provider who should decide whether an ultrasound, CT, MRI or other examination is needed.
Seek immediate medical attention for severe abdominal pain, high fever, chest pain, difficulty breathing, sudden neurological effects or rapid deterioration in general condition.
Privately scheduled diagnostic imaging is not suitable as a first step in emergency situations.
Planned private MRI should not replace emergency care for sudden, severe or rapidly worsening symptoms.
Can ultrasound and MRI complement each other?
Yes. Ultrasound can sometimes be the first examination and MRI can be used if more detailed information is needed.
In other cases, MRI is more directly relevant, for example in many questions about the spine, brain or joints.
The important thing is not to see the methods as general substitutes for each other. They answer different types of questions.
What happens after the examination?
Regardless of the method, the results need to be assessed in a medical context. Findings may be significant, harmless, or need to be checked.
If the examination does not explain the symptoms, the next step may be sampling, other imaging tests, or specialist assessment.
A clear answer and a plan for follow-up are therefore at least as important as the choice of method.
Limitations and next steps
MRI or ultrasound needs to be understood as part of a larger medical whole. Imaging diagnostics can provide important answers, but it cannot alone explain all symptoms or replace a clinical assessment.
A finding on MRI may be significant, but may also be an age-related or benign change. Similarly, a normal MRI response may need to be followed up if symptoms persist or change.
The best next step therefore depends on what the examination shows, how your symptoms develop, and whether there are risk factors, previous illnesses, or other test results to consider.
