What can be discovered at a gastroscopy examination?

  • Inflammation: gastritis, esophagitis, duodenitis
  • Gastric and duodenal ulcers
  • Barrett's esophagus
  • Hiatal hernia – diaphragmatic hernia
  • Cancer of the esophagus, stomach, or duodenum
  • Polyps (removed during the examination and analyzed)
  • Celiac disease (gluten intolerance)
  • Ulcers and bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract
  • Helicobacter pylori infection

Gastroscopy examination

Prevent upper gastrointestinal disease and investigate symptoms from the stomach, esophagus and beginning of the duodenum

Why gastroscopy examination?

Diseases of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum are common and can cause long-term problems. Symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, blood in vomit or stool, unexplained weight loss, long-term stomach pain, persistent nausea or vomiting, iron deficiency/anemia or a genetic predisposition to stomach cancer may be signs of serious illness.

Common symptoms of serious upper gastrointestinal disease are:
– Heartburn or acid reflux
– Difficulty swallowing
– Pain or burning sensation in the upper abdomen
– Persistent nausea or vomiting
– Blood in vomit or dark stools (signs of bleeding)
– Unexplained weight loss
– Anemia/iron deficiency
– Feeling full or feeling full early

Gastroscopy – remove polyps and detect pathological changes

Gastroscopy is the best method for examining the inside of the esophagus, stomach and the beginning of the duodenum, to detect early mucosal changes, ulcers, inflammation and polyps. Polyps can be removed painlessly during the examination, which can reduce the risk of cancer development. Gastroscopy can also detect and take tissue samples from suspicious areas for further analysis. Infection with Helicobacter Pylori bacteria in the stomach lining can also be examined.

Gastroscopy is also used to diagnose, among other things:
– Inflammation of the stomach or esophagus (gastritis, esophagitis)
– Gastric and duodenal ulcers
– Celiac disease (gluten intolerance)
– Barrett's esophagus (changes in the lining of the esophagus)
– Tumors in the upper gastrointestinal tract
– Infection with Helicobacter Pylori bacteria

Can computed tomography (CT) or MRI be used to examine the upper gastrointestinal tract?

Computed tomography and MRI can sometimes provide some general information, but absolutely cannot provide the same detailed image of organs, the mucosa and does not allow tissue samples as gastroscopy. In addition, the patient is exposed to radiation during a CT examination. MRI examination does not contain any radiation. If a disease in the upper gastrointestinal tract is suspected, a gastroscopy is required to ensure diagnosis and treatment.

Results of gastroscopy examination directly from specialist doctor at the examination

During a private gastroscopy, your esophagus, stomach and duodenum are examined directly by a gastroenterologist and you are informed during the examination. Prevcare's doctor then analyzes and compiles the results in an individual written report that you receive within 7 working days of the examination.

Tissue sample results and referral if necessary

Polyps and other tissue samples (biopsies) taken during gastroscopy are analyzed by specialist doctors in a laboratory. The response time is normally 4–8 weeks.

If we discover something serious during the examination or analysis of your tissue samples, our doctor will, in dialogue with you, send a referral to an appropriate healthcare provider so that you receive the right help. The referral is included in the cost of the examination at Prevcare Clinic.

Information about Gastroscopy examination

What is gastroscopy?

Gastroscopy is the examination of the esophagus, stomach and the beginning of the duodenum with a narrow, flexible instrument called an endoscope. The endoscope is equipped with a camera and light that transmits a clear image of the mucous membranes to a monitor. The doctor can examine the tissues and, if necessary, take tissue samples and remove polyps.

How a gastroscopy examination is done

Before the examination, you will receive a local anesthetic spray in your throat. You will lie on a table while the doctor inserts the endoscope through your mouth and down your esophagus. You will be offered sedative and painkilling medication before the examination. Contact with the healthcare staff will be maintained at all times.
The examination usually takes 10–20 minutes.

Gastroscopy preparations

In your invitation/information for the examination, you will receive detailed instructions on how to prepare. Before the examination, your stomach should be empty, which means that you must not eat or drink for a certain period of time before the visit. This is important so that the doctor can examine the mucosa clearly.

Things to consider during gastroscopy

After the examination, you may have mild discomfort in your throat or a feeling of bloating in your stomach. These symptoms usually go away quickly. You can eat and drink as usual once the anesthesia in your throat has worn off.

If you have received sedative medication, you will need to stay at the clinic for a short time and you will not be allowed to drive until a few hours later, as your ability to react is impaired due to the sedative medication.
