Heart examination

Reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes

The most common cause of death in Sweden is cardiovascular disease.

Lifestyle diseases such as heart attacks and strokes currently account for 31% of all deaths in Sweden. Plaque formation and the buildup of dangerous fats in the blood vessels do not occur overnight, but develop over many years before symptoms appear.
Half of all people who die from a heart attack have never had any symptoms before. Through early detection of vascular changes, you can prevent the development of serious disease with the right diet, exercise and possible treatment.

What is included in a heart examination?

Prevcare's heart examination includes Echocardiography/ultrasound of the heart, resting ECG and blood tests.

1. Blood tests for blood lipids and blood sugar
Triglycerides, Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, LDL/HDL ratio, Apo A1, Apo B, Apo B/A1 ratio and HbA1c

High blood lipids/cholesterol are an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease. When blood lipids become elevated, fat can begin to accumulate inside the blood vessels.

There are different types of blood lipids:

HDL – or “good cholesterol” as it is sometimes called – transports cholesterol away from the blood vessels to the liver, where it is broken down.

LDL, or the “bad cholesterol” as it is sometimes called, instead transports cholesterol to the blood vessels, thereby accelerating atherosclerosis.

If you have an unfavorable distribution between good and bad blood fats, it can increase your risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease. Through the right diet and exercise, you can lower the bad cholesterol LDL and raise the good cholesterol HDL. This reduces your risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease.

HbA1c is used to diagnose diabetes or your risk of developing diabetes. This test is also used to monitor blood sugar levels for those who have already been diagnosed with diabetes.

2. Ultrasound of the heart (echocardiography)
Ultrasound of the heart is done to check the size of the heart chambers (atria and ventricles), the heart's movement and pumping function, and the function and appearance of the heart valves. The blood flow in the heart and its speed are also examined. This can determine the heart's pumping capacity, which shows how effectively the heart is oxygenating all the body's organs. This can be used to detect heart failure, heart attack, inflammation of the heart muscle (endocarditis), valve and other heart diseases.

3. ECG examination
An ECG is a picture of the heart's electrical impulses and their appearance (the ECG waveform). By documenting your heartbeat, it can detect cardiovascular diseases such as atrial fibrillation, heart attack and serious rhythm disturbances that can cause, for example, sudden cardiac arrest.

Results of examination from specialist doctor within 10 working days

During your examination, your results are first reviewed by a heart specialist. Prevcare's specialist doctors then analyze and compile the results into an individual written report that you will receive within 10 working days of the examination. Your results/report will also be sent to you, which you can print out and take to your doctor. This way, you will more quickly find out what your symptoms are due to and what treatment is available to you.

Referral to a specialist if necessary

If we discover something serious during your examination, our doctor will, in dialogue with you, send a referral to your health center or specialist clinic to ensure you receive the right help. The referral is included in the cost of the examination at Prevcare Clinic.

Information about Heart Examination

What is included in a heart examination?
  • Prevcare's heart examination includes a resting ECG, ultrasound of the heart and blood tests.
  • Before blood tests, you need to fast from midnight the night before (black coffee, tea or water is fine).
  • ECG + Ultrasound of the heart does not require any preparation.
  • ECG examination.
An ECG is a method of measuring the electrical activity of the heart. An ECG can detect disturbances in the heart's rhythm such as atrial fibrillation or arrhythmia, heart diseases such as heart failure or heart attack, and other abnormalities.
  • Ultrasound of the heart (echocardiography)
Echocardiography examines the size of the heart (atria and ventricles), the heart's movement and pumping function, the thickness of the heart muscle, and the function of the valves. No special preparation is required for an ECG and ultrasound of the heart.
  • Blood tests – blood fats, cholesterol and blood sugar:
    Triglycerides
    Cholesterol
    HDL
    LDL
    LDL/HDL ratio
    Apo A1
    Apo B
    Apo B/A1 ratio
    Hba1c
This is how a heart examination is done:

Resting ECG:

  • You will lie on your back with a total of 10 electrodes (small adhesive patches) placed on your chest, wrists and ankles. The electrodes capture and record the electrical activity of your heart.
  • The survey takes about 10 minutes.

Ultrasound heart:

  • The examination is performed with you lying on your left side. An ultrasound transducer is placed against your chest and sends out ultrasound waves that are reflected off different parts of the heart. The signal is converted into a moving image on the ultrasound machine's screen.
  • The survey takes about 30 minutes.
How to take blood samples for a heart examination:
  • Before blood tests, you need to fast from midnight the night before (black coffee, tea or water is fine), and have the blood tests taken before 9:30 a.m. When you arrive at the lab/clinic, take a number and wait until your number is called. You only need to show your ID to the nurse before the test so they know which samples you need to take.

Our social promise: we support the Swedish Cancer Society

At Prevcare Clinic, we believe in making a difference – We work every day to improve people's health through advanced medical diagnostics. We perform MRI scans, CT scans, heart scans, colonoscopies and blood tests – with the goal of detecting diseases at an early stage, to give each patient the best possible chance of diagnosis and treatment.

As a natural part of our commitment to human health, we have chosen to support the Swedish Cancer Society with a donation to benefit Swedish cancer research. This is important to us – not only as a healthcare provider, but as a social actor. Our donation goes to vital research in the field of cancer, with the hope of contributing to more breakthroughs, earlier diagnoses and better treatment outcomes.

Our daily work at Prevcare Clinic is about early detection and prevention of serious diseases – and through our donation to the Swedish Cancer Society, we also want to support research that makes future care even better.
