What can be discovered at a colonoscopy examination?

  • Inflammation: Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Microscopic Colitis
  • Intestinal pouches - Diverticula and inflammation of these
  • Cancer
  • Wound
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Other intestinal changes
  • Polyps: Small early changes in the colon and rectum that can develop into tumors in the future. When polyps are discovered, they are easily and painlessly removed during the examination, which can prevent the development of cancer.

Why a colonoscopy examination?

Colorectal cancer is the third most common form of cancer in Sweden. Symptoms from the intestine are usually due to harmless causes, but if you are over 50 years old and have problems with changed bowel habits, blood in the stool, diarrhea, increased heredity for colorectal cancer, sudden weight loss, anemia/iron deficiency, these may be signs of cancer.

The most common symptoms of colon cancer according to the Swedish Cancer Society:
– blood in the stool
– hard in the stomach or loose in the stomach
– prolonged diarrhea
– constipation or having to poop often
– excessive mucus production in the intestine which makes the stool slimy
– pain in the stomach, sometimes like stomach cramps
– upset stomach
– anemia
– fatigue
– weight loss

Colonoscopy of the colon and rectum – remove polyps

Colonoscopy is the best examination of the inside of the colon and rectum to detect early mucosal changes (polyps) and remove them painlessly, which can prevent the development of colon cancer. Approximately 20% of all 60-year-olds have polyps. Polyps develop dangerous mutations and transformation into cancer over time. The vast majority of all colon cancer starts in a polyp.

Colonoscopy can also diagnose intestinal pouches (diverticula), inflammation such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, microscopic colitis, ulcers or cancer by painlessly sampling suspicious and exposed areas during your colonoscopy examination.

Can computed tomography (CT colon) be used for colon cancer screening?

Both the European Society of Radiologists and gastroenterologists (gastrointestinal doctors) believe that this method is not yet suitable. The advantages are that you do not need to insert an instrument into the intestine and thus risk discomfort from this and the minimal risk of perforation. The disadvantages of CT are that people are exposed to radiation. There is the same requirement for bowel cleansing, which is experienced as unpleasant, and if a polyp is found, a colonoscopy must still be performed. In other words; a large proportion of the screening people must be examined again, that is, take time off from work, clean the intestine and go for an examination.

Colonoscopy examination results directly from specialist doctor at the examination

During a private colonoscopy, your colon and rectum are examined directly by a gastrointestinal specialist and you are informed during the examination. Prevcare's doctor then analyzes and compiles the results in an individual written report that you receive within 10 working days of the examination.

Tissue sample results and referral if necessary

The polyps and tissue samples (biopsies) taken during the colonoscopy are analyzed by specialist doctors in a laboratory, which takes 4-8 weeks to get results.

If we discover something serious during the examination or analysis of your tissue samples, our doctor will communicate with you and send a referral to an appropriate healthcare provider to ensure you receive the right help.
The referral is included in the cost of the examination at Prevcare Clinic.

Information about Colonoscopy Examination

What is colonoscopy?
  • Colonoscopy is the examination of the large intestine using a narrow, flexible instrument called an endoscope. The endoscope documents the intestine with fiber optics that transmit the view of the inside of the intestine to a monitor. The doctor can examine the intestinal mucosa and also take tissue samples from it.
How a colonoscopy examination is done
  • Before the examination, you will be given ointment to numb the anus. You will then lie on a table while the doctor inserts the endoscope through your rectum.
  • You will be offered painkillers and relaxing medications before the procedure. You will be in constant contact with healthcare professionals.
  • An examination can take between 20 and 40 minutes.
Colonoscopy preparations
  • In your invitation you will receive detailed instructions on how to prepare for the examination. It is very important to follow these instructions, so that the bowel is clear of contents with the help of dietary advice and laxatives.
Things to consider during colonoscopy
  • After the examination, you may feel a little tense and bloated in your stomach due to air that has entered. The discomfort usually disappears when the air comes out.
  • You can eat and drink as usual after the examination. If you have been given sedative medication, you may remain in the clinic for up to an hour.
  • If you have been given sedative medication – keep in mind that you cannot drive until after a few hours.

Our social promise: we support the Swedish Cancer Society

At Prevcare Clinic, we believe in making a difference – We work every day to improve people's health through advanced medical diagnostics. We perform MRI scans, CT scans, heart scans, colonoscopies and blood tests – with the goal of detecting diseases at an early stage, to give each patient the best possible chance of diagnosis and treatment.

As a natural part of our commitment to human health, we have chosen to support the Swedish Cancer Society with a donation to benefit Swedish cancer research. This is important to us – not only as a healthcare provider, but as a social actor. Our donation goes to vital research in the field of cancer, with the hope of contributing to more breakthroughs, earlier diagnoses and better treatment outcomes.

Our daily work at Prevcare Clinic is about early detection and prevention of serious diseases – and through our donation to the Swedish Cancer Society, we also want to support research that makes future care even better.
