DT Lungs / Chest

A CT scan of your lungs may show: response to your symptoms

Why CT Lungs (CT scan)?

Do you have symptoms from your lungs or chest? A cough that doesn't go away, shortness of breath even though you haven't exerted yourself, recurring pneumonia, wheezing or wheezing, chest pain, swollen lymph nodes in your armpits? Whether your symptoms are due to a tumor, infection, inflammation, blood clot (pulmonary embolism), emphysema, COPD or other conditions, a computed tomography, CT or CT scan of the lungs can determine the exact cause, or how to proceed with the investigation.

CT scans provide hundreds of millimeter-level images of your lungs and chest, allowing doctors to quickly detect early signs of disease and thus improve your odds of receiving the best treatment. CT lung scans are a highly reliable, simple, painless, and advanced method that uses a very low dose of X-ray radiation (see below).

The sooner the cause of your symptoms can be identified, the sooner you can receive the right treatment for your condition. Therefore, we recommend that you order a private CT scan of your lungs if you suspect you have a serious illness.

Is computed tomography (CT) dangerous?

A CT scan is a painless X-ray of your lungs and chest. A CT scan uses X-rays, which are a type of ionizing radiation. The radiation dose is adjusted to be as low as possible, around 3-5 millisieverts (mSv). A CT scan gives about the same amount of radiation as you get from natural radiation sources in Sweden in a year.

Today, we know that risks of damage arise when a person is exposed to more than 100 millisieverts over a year, which means that there is no problem in repeating a CT scan a couple of times after a couple of months.

There is no CT machine that is called low-dose today. The CT machines (abbreviated as CT or CT) used in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö are modern and have all the necessary parameters to keep the radiation dose as low as possible.

In some cases, it may be necessary to use contrast media during the lung examination, which is determined by the radiology specialist.
Please state in the health declaration when ordering if you know that you are allergic to contrast media or have impaired kidney or liver function. Prevcare's doctor will then write on the referral that you cannot tolerate contrast media. The radiologist will then decide how the examination can be performed.

Is a CT scan of the lungs and chest something for me?

By performing a CT scan of the lungs/chest within 7 working days, doctors can quickly and clearly identify any disease, injury or other abnormality that may be the cause of your symptoms. The examination is recommended if you suffer from lung/chest complaints in the form of persistent cough, bloody phlegm, shortness of breath without exertion, chest pain, wheezing/wheezing or other symptoms that have come on without warning.

Results of examination from specialist doctor within 7 working days

After your examination, your scan will first be reviewed by an X-ray specialist.

Prevcare's specialist doctors then analyze and compile the results in an individual written report that you will receive within 7 working days after the examination.

You will also receive a USB with your CT images sent home from your examination.

Referral to a specialist if necessary

If we discover something serious during your examination, our doctor will, in dialogue with you, send a referral to your health center or specialist clinic so that you can get the right help. The referral is included in the cost of the DT-Lungor examination at Prevcare Clinic.

Information about DT Lungs / Chest

What is a CT scan?
  • Computed tomography (CT scan) is a special form of X-ray that creates very detailed images of the body's organs. This makes it easier for the doctor to detect diseases and injuries in, for example, the lungs. The examination sometimes uses contrast agents that you receive with a syringe and that provide an even clearer image of the body's structures.
  • The technology is used to detect diseases, map injuries and follow up treatments in almost all human organs down to the millimeter level, for example tumors, blood clots, inflammation and bone diseases.
How a DT Lungs/Chest is done:
  • CT scans are performed in radiology departments. The images are first reviewed by a radiology specialist. Prevcare's specialist then reviews the results, writes a summary and recommendations. If necessary, a referral is sent for further processing.
  • When you are examined with a CT scan, you lie down on a table that is inserted into a ring-shaped opening. The CT scanner is a device that is so open in both directions that very few people feel any cell fear when they lie on the table. There you lie still while the images are taken. A nurse operates the camera from an adjacent room and you can talk to the nurse at all times through a microphone and speaker.
  • No preparation is required before a CT scan if you do not need to use contrast media, and you can leave the clinic immediately afterwards.
  • For certain questions regarding the lungs/chest, contrast media is used in CT scans of the lungs, which are injected intravenously (into the blood). An injection needle (venflon) is then inserted into a blood vessel (usually in the crook of the arm) for this injection. It is good to drink plenty of fluids the day after if contrast media has been given during the examination, as the contrast media is excreted via the kidneys and disappears from the body in the urine.
  • You will receive detailed information from your clinic before your CT scan.
  • DT Lungs/Chest takes about 15-20 minutes.
Who is not suitable for CT examination?
  • If you are pregnant, you should not undergo a CT scan.
  • Important if you have allergies
If you know that you are allergic to X-ray contrast agents, you must let us know this when you fill out your health form. The doctor will then write on the referral that you cannot tolerate contrast agents and the radiologist will then decide how the examination can be performed. The radiology nurse will ask you if you are allergic before the examination, as this type of agent can sometimes trigger allergic reactions, especially in hypersensitive people.
  • Important if you have kidney disease or other risk factors such as diabetes
If you have kidney disease that has severely affected your kidney function, you should usually avoid having contrast media in your blood, as contrast media can further impair kidney function. Sometimes, you still need to have contrast media in order for your doctor to make a diagnosis. In these cases, you will be examined with as little contrast media as possible.
  • Cellulite or other discomfort
The CT scanner is a device that is so open in both directions that very few people feel any phobias when they lie on the bed. If you have pronounced phobias, you may be given sedation before the CT scan.
  • When using contrast media, you are likely to experience a rapidly passing feeling of warmth from your head to your toes. You may also feel the need to urinate and have a metallic taste in your mouth.
How do I prepare for the lung examination?
  • It is important that you state if you have diabetes, kidney problems or other illnesses in your health form. This is so that our doctors can assess your condition as accurately as possible.
  • It is also important that you tell us if you suffer from claustrophobia, or have a general feeling of discomfort in confined spaces. In this case, a discussion can be held with the responsible doctor regarding whether it is necessary to prescribe sedatives to make the examination as comfortable as possible. If you think that you are calmed by music, there is also, in some cases, the possibility of playing music during the examination for your comfort.
  • Please state in your health form if you have had previous X-ray examinations. This is so that our doctors can assess your condition as accurately as possible.
  • Otherwise, it is good to discuss with the responsible specialist to see if there is anything above that cannot be fulfilled. At Prevcare, we are usually flexible in terms of solutions.
